A
new report has found that insufficient consideration is being given to
the skills needs of directors on the boards of Irish State bodies when
appointments are being made.
The research report, State boards in Ireland 2012 - Challenges for the future, was released by the Institute of Directors in Ireland.
It
found that the boards of Irish State bodies are well advanced in terms
of formal director training and in a number of key corporate governance
areas. But the findings also indicate there are issues regarding
transparency in the process of appointment to State boards.
While
the report found that the level of political involvement in State
bodies is at an appropriate level, there is widespread support for more
defined independence from the political system in relation to board
appointments.
The research was
carried out among members of the Institute of Directors in Ireland,
comprising chairpersons, non-executive directors, executive directors
and chief executives of State bodies.
