Report highlights issues with appointments to State boards

A new report has found that insufficient consideration is being given to the skills needs of directors on the boards of Irish State bodies when appointments are being made.
The research report, State boards in Ireland 2012 - Challenges for the future, was released by the Institute of Directors in Ireland.
It found that the boards of Irish State bodies are well advanced in terms of formal director training and in a number of key corporate governance areas. But the findings also indicate there are issues regarding transparency in the process of appointment to State boards.
While the report found that the level of political involvement in State bodies is at an appropriate level, there is widespread support for more defined independence from the political system in relation to board appointments.
The research was carried out among members of the Institute of Directors in Ireland, comprising chairpersons, non-executive directors, executive directors and chief executives of State bodies.
